Project Description:   Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Little Rock program provides child safety restraints.


  • Coordination and referral: Of those high-risk families that were referred, 23 children were assessed and provided 19 car seats.
  • Childcare: Targeting 3 child care centers, 77 children were assessed with 47 children requiring car seats.
  • Schools: Roughly 50 teachers and staff at Martin Luther King Elementary School were educated on child passenger seats, with a follow-up planned with those MLK families in February 2006.
  • Hispanic families: Through the Dept. of Community Outreach, 34 car seats of families in southwest Little Rock were checked with 13 new seats subsequently provided.
  • Children with special needs: 692 hospital children and 397 infants were screened for child passenger restraint needs, resulting in 57 children being loaned special car seat/beds and 85 being provided conventional seats.

Lives Affected

1,300 children and infants were assessed for proper child safety seats. 50 teachers and staff at MLK educated to proper seat restraints.

Cost Effectiveness

According to NHSTA, for each $45 seat, roughly $1,400 in injury costs is avoided. As an upper bound estimate, $298,200 in injury costs were avoided in distributing 213 new car seats and $1,115,800 costs saved in assessing 797 children for appropriate restraint.
