Grant Year:   2007

Grant Amount:   $44,900

Project Description:   Train 35 facilitators for Breath Well, Live Well Adult Asthma project that serves adults from Pulaski, Washington, Benton, Garland, and Craighead counties providing self-management skills to reduce the burden of asthma in adults and improve the quality of life for lung-disease patients.

Outcomes

  • 35 health-care professionals certified as trainers.
  • Five train-the-trainer workshops conducted (in Little Rock, Bentonville, Jonesboro and West Memphis).
  • 435 adults completed the program.
  • The post-class evaluation indicated that participants had a clearer understanding of asthma and were more confident in controlling their symptoms.
  • The two-week post-class phone interviews indicated that participants were experiencing fewer asthma symptoms as the result of 1) reducing the asthma triggers in their home environment and 2) adhering to their medication schedule, using their asthma action plans or returning to their doctor to reassess their treatment plan. Medication compliance improved and the use of rescue medications for maintenance diminished.

Lives Affected

391 adults with asthma (and 44 partners) attended the asthma management program, for a total of 435 adults.

Cost Effectiveness

The cost of the program was $103.22 per participant. The post-class follow up was too short to assess the direct health cost (hospitalization, doctor visits) of asthma or the indirect cost (such as missed work days). However, participants did report using fewer doses of rescue medication as the result of improved self-care practices, which will over time impact health-care cost.
