Project Description: |
|
Your Body, Your Health program designed to increase health knowledge and modify behavior patterns regarding hypertension, stroke, teen pregnancy, breast self-exams and sickle cell anemia. |
Outcomes
- Provided health education training to 10 Community Health Workers in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, stroke, teen pregnancy, breast self-exams and sickle cell anemia.
-
Provided screenings for glucose, sickle cell, cholesterol and blood pressure.
-
Developed displays to be placed in such key locations as churches, beauty and barbershops, and schools.
Lives Affected
A total of 2,359 individuals were affected by the various programs:
1,450 participated in health education workshops;
325 received sickle cell screening and 83 attended sickle cell workshops;
and 501 received glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.
Cost Effectiveness
Prevention, being the most effective form of disease control, precludes such episodes as a stroke, which cost $3,000 per month to treat. The Delta AHEC, through this program, was able to meet three of the American Diabetes Association’s criteria for disease management.
